Problem with Our Drinking Water

The main source of drinking water in Hong Kong comes from Dongjiang Raw Water supplied from China. Historical quality data for our drinking water published by the Water Supplies Department of Hong Kong Government has shown that most parameters are in compliance with the reference standards. Yet there are still concerns about the hygiene, if not the deteriorating quality, of Dongjiang Raw Water.

One major source of contaminants to our drinking water is our poor plumbing and water storage systems. These include dissolved metals, organic matters like bacteria and viruses from the pipes and tanks. Hong Kong may have a world-class water treatment plant, yet our distribution network could be working against our health.

How does the machine work?

Reverse Osmosis is a superior but cost-effective technology compared to conventional water purification methods. It operates by applying high pressure to the solution such that water molecules are forced through a semi-permeable membrane as a lower concentration solution.

The membrane is made with very tiny pores down to 0.0001 micron (the diameter of a typical human hair is about 80 - 120 micron). These pores, acting as selecting gages, allow only the smaller water molecules to permeate through. The larger contaminants including bacteria, viruses, dissolved heavy metal ions etc. cannot flow through the membrane but exit the system as the Concentrated Stream.

As a result, what is collected on the other side of the membrane is pure water. There is no unwanted contaminants deposited on the membrane, in contrast with conventional filtration methods where the filters could easily clog and become breeding sites for bacteria.

Usual criticism about Reverse Osmosis water are 'the absence of trace minerals', or 'pH is slightly acidic'.
